Relax With Sedation While You Receive Your New Smile

If you struggle with anxiety about the dentist, it’s completely understandable. A study recently showed that about 36 percent of adults in the U.S. struggle with some form of dental anxiety. There’s no reason to be afraid when you visit the team at North Oaks Dental Implant & Sedation Center. In addition to our advanced technology and years of experience, you’ll have your pick of great sedation methods:

  • Inhaled Sedation – Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is a gaseous medicine ingested through a nasal mask. Patients frequently feel sleepy and at ease as a result of this sedation dentistry option, but most remain awake, alert, and responsive throughout their treatment. Once the procedure is over, the effects of the nitrous oxide quickly wear off, meaning most patients can drive themselves home after treatment.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation – Oral sedation refers to the use of an oral prescription drug. This type of sedation dentistry is taken approximately an hour prior to the procedure, either at home or when you arrive at our office. Patients may experience anything from a mild reduction in anxiety to feeling so comfortable they fall asleep in the chair. In most instances, transportation is required as you will likely still be under the effects of the oral sedative for several hours after your procedure is finished.
  • IV Sedation – This type of dental anesthesia is administered intravenously and puts patients into a deep sleep-like state (though rarely a patient will remain conscious during treatment). IV sedation patients often experience short-term amnesic side effects, causing them to forget some or all individuals with severe anxiety or those in need of more involved surgeries, IV sedation is often the best option. Patients will require someone to drive them home following their visit due to the lingering effects of the sedation.

During your consultation, we’ll review which option is ideal for you, based on your level of anxiety. We can also review ways you can relieve your anxiety before you arrive. For example, you may want to schedule your appointment when it’s quiet in our office or less stressful on your schedule. You can also bring comfort items of your own to ease your nerves. It’s important you feel comfortable during your visit.

Common Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Does sedation dentistry work for most patients?

Over the years, we have found that at least one of our three sedation options will benefit any patient. If you’re nervous about your visit with us, you’ll have your choice of sedation options. We’ll discuss each one in detail, answer any questions you have about sedation, and help you decide on the method that’s right for you.

Are your sedation options safe?

Of course! All three kinds of sedation we offer have been safely used in dentistry for many years. Plus, our dentists and other members of our staff have extensive training and experience in administering sedation. No matter which kind of sedation you choose, we will carefully monitor you throughout your treatment.

How long does dental sedation last?

It varies, depending on the type of sedation used. You inhale laughing gas through a mask worn over your nose. It wears off very quickly when the mask is removed. You also won’t feel groggy; you’ll even be able to drive yourself home. In contrast, you’ll feel the effects of oral sedation and IV sedation for up to several hours after your procedure.
